Birth/Marriage Certificates & Other Vital Docs
Vital records in Rhode Island are maintained by the Center for Vital Records, a division of the Department of Health. Certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates may also be obtained from the city or town hall where the event occurred.
ⓘ Fee required for certified copies. Recent records (births from 1960 onward; deaths and marriages from 2022 onward) are available at any city or town hall. Older records must be requested from the city or town where the event occurred, or from the State Office of Vital Records. Records more than 100 years old (births and marriages) or more than 50 years old (deaths) are held by the Rhode Island State Archives.
Deeds & Land Records
Land records in Rhode Island are maintained by the Town or City Clerk in each of the state's 39 municipalities. The Rhode Island Land Records page, maintained by RI.gov, provides direct links to online land evidence records for the municipalities that offer them, as well as links to each municipality's tax assessment information.
ⓘ 25 of 39 municipalities have land evidence records available online. For municipalities without online access, contact the Town or City Clerk directly to request copies of recorded documents. All recorded instruments are indexed by grantor/grantee name and assigned a book and page number.
Property Assessments
Property assessments in Rhode Island are set by each city or town's Tax Assessor. The Rhode Island Land Records page on RI.gov includes links to each municipality's online tax assessment database, where property values, ownership, and parcel data can be searched.
