Town-Based Records — Maine
Note: Maine does not have county-level government. All public records are maintained at the town or city level. Use the links below to locate the appropriate office for your municipality.
Birth/Marriage Certificates & Other Vital Docs
Vital records in Maine are maintained by the Division of Vital Records within the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The Division holds birth, death, marriage, and divorce records from 1892 to the present and issues certified copies by mail or in person. Certified copies may also be obtained from the municipal clerk in the town or city where the event was recorded.
ⓘ Fee required for certified copies. Birth and death records are restricted; marriage and divorce records are generally available to the public. Municipal clerks maintain records for events that occurred in their municipality and are often the fastest and least expensive option — contact the clerk in the town or city where the event took place.
Deeds & Land Records
Land records in Maine are recorded and maintained by the Registry of Deeds in each of the state's 16 counties. MaineRegistryofDeeds.com is the official statewide portal for all county registries, providing a single point of access to search deeds, mortgages, liens, plans, and other recorded instruments across the state.
ⓘ The first 400 document pages per calendar year are free; additional pages are $0.50 each. Select your county from the portal to reach that registry's search interface. Records are indexed by grantor/grantee name and document type.
Property Assessments
Property assessment in Maine is administered at the municipal level by a local assessor or board of assessors. Maine Revenue Services oversees statewide assessment standards and serves as the local assessor for unorganized territory (areas not incorporated as municipalities). There is no single statewide public property search database — contact your town or city assessor directly, or use an online platform if your municipality participates.
ⓘ Many Maine municipalities provide online property record cards through Vision Government Solutions (vgsi.com/maine-online-database) or John E. O'Donnell & Associates (jeodonnell.com). If your municipality is not listed on either platform, contact the town or city office directly to request assessment records.
Tax Records & Payment History
Property tax collection in Maine is administered by each municipality's tax collector or treasurer. Tax bills, payment history, and online payment options vary by town or city. Maine.gov provides an online municipal payment portal for participating municipalities where residents can pay property taxes and utility bills electronically.
ⓘ Select your municipality from the portal to pay property taxes online. If your municipality is not listed, contact your town or city office directly — most municipalities accept payment by mail, in person, or via a town-specific online payment system. Maine Revenue Services sets property tax policy but does not process municipal tax payments.
GIS Maps & Parcel Boundaries
Due to the huge variation of GIS data sites, please visit the county's main website for any GIS or map/parcel lookup.
ⓘ GIS portals vary widely by county — most are accessible directly from the county's official homepage.
